Supplies Needed:
- Stainless Steel Bowl or Glass Bowl
- Gloves
- Stainless Steel Bath Bomb Mold. Circular molds work best, but you can get creative and use muffin tins, melon ball scooper, silicon mold, candy molds, etc.
- Spritzer Bottle
- Non-stick Spray
Dry Ingredients
- 8 ounces Corn Starch
- 16 ounces Baking Soda
- 8 ounces Citric Acid (add at the end to ensure fizzing doesn't occur in your bowl)
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Essential Oils - for a light scent, use a 1/2 teaspoon. For a bolder scent, use one teaspoon
- 1 ounce Cocoa Butter or Sweet Almond Oil, or Grapeseed Oil
- 1/2 teaspoon Water or Witch Hazel in a spritzer bottle
- 1/2 teaspoon of cosmetic grade colorant or natural food coloring if desired
Recipe Variations:
Add these fun ingredients to your recipe
- One teaspoon of dried flowers or herbs
- One teaspoon glitter
- Small plastic toys
Directions: Put your gloves on. Get your mold ready by spraying with non-stick spray. Set aside. Measure out 8 ounces of citric acid and set aside.
Take the rest of the dry ingredients and add them to a bowl. Heat the Cocoa Butter in a water bath until melted. Using liquid oil such as Sweet Almond Oil or Grapeseed Oil instead of Cocoa Butter, omit the heating.
Add the essential oils and any colorants. Then, drizzle your wet mixture into the dry mix. Next, add the citric acid. Mix well so that your bath bombs will stay intact and won't crumble. Form your bath bombs by scooping out a small amount.
Tips for Making Bath Bombs
- The number one tip is to create a smooth appearance by using cornstarch in your formula. Bath bombs that look lumpy tend to crumble.
- If you don't have a circular mold, use a melon ball scooper. To harden correctly, these will need to dry for 48 - 72 hours. Don't use too much moisture to form your bath bombs.
- The amount of liquid used will vary. If you live in a dry climate, you may need to add a spritzer bottle to apply the liquid. This way, you can distribute the liquid for an even coat to bind the ingredients.
- Spray your mold with non-stick spray, so they pop out easily. Just make sure that they are dry throughout before using them.
