Snap-8 vs Argireline: Which Expression Line Peptide Suits You?

Snap-8 (Acetyl Octapeptide-3) and Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8) come from the same maker, Lubrizol (Lipotec), and target the same thing: the look of expression lines around the eyes and forehead. Snap-8 is an eight-amino-acid relative of six-amino-acid Argireline, used at 3 to 10% against Argireline's 2 to 10%. Argireline has more independent human studies. Snap-8's advantage rests on supplier figures.

  • Argireline INCI: Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, formerly listed as Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 (CosIng record).
  • Snap-8 INCI: Acetyl Octapeptide-3, sold as Water (Aqua), Acetyl Octapeptide-3, Caprylyl Glycol (Lubrizol).
  • Use levels: Argireline solution C 2 to 10% (Lubrizol), Snap-8 3 to 10% (Lubrizol).
  • pH: Argireline Amplified is pH 4.0 to 5.5 as supplied and works in formulas from pH 4.0 to 8.0 (Lotioncrafter). No Snap-8 pH appeared on the maker or distributor pages reviewed.
  • Solubility: both water-soluble, both added below 40°C (Lotioncrafter).

What is the difference between Snap-8 and Argireline?

The main difference is length. Argireline is six amino acids, Snap-8 is eight. In laboratory models, Lubrizol says Argireline destabilizes the SNARE complex, a protein assembly involved in cell signaling (Lubrizol, Argireline), and describes Snap-8 as an analogue of the start of the SNAP-25 protein that competes for a place in that complex (SpecialChem, Snap-8). Lotioncrafter calls Argireline the "parent peptide" of Snap-8 (Lotioncrafter).

On skin, both are aimed at the look of lines that form with movement: crow's feet, forehead lines and the lines between the brows.

Is Snap-8 better than Argireline?

The supplier says so, and that is the only evidence I could find. Lotioncrafter's Snap-8 sheet states that eye-area line severity fell by up to 63.13% in clinical studies and that Snap-8 is about 30% more active than Argireline (Lotioncrafter). The sheet gives no panel size, duration or concentration. I could not find an independent study comparing the two.

Argireline has more outside data, and it is mixed:

  • Wang and colleagues, 2013: 60 adults, Argireline or placebo in a 3:1 split, twice daily for 4 weeks. Subjective efficacy was 48.9% against 0% for placebo (study record). A dermatologist's review notes the study was not blinded (Baumann, MDedge).
  • Henseler, 2023: 19 women, split-face and double-blind, 4 weeks. No significant difference between the Argireline side and the control side (Henseler).

So the fair answer is: Snap-8 has supplier-reported advantages, and Argireline has a longer, more mixed public record.

Snap-8 vs Argireline side by side

Argireline Snap-8
INCI name Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 Acetyl Octapeptide-3
What it is Six-amino-acid sequence, Lubrizol (Lipotec) Eight-amino-acid sequence, Lubrizol (Lipotec)
How it works (maker description, lab research) Destabilizes the SNARE complex SNAP-25 copy that competes in the SNARE complex
Typical usage rate 2 to 10% (solution C), 2 to 5% (Amplified) 3 to 10%
pH working range 4.0 to 8.0 in formula (Amplified grade) Not published on the pages reviewed
Solubility Water (an oil-soluble YOUth grade also exists) Water
Pairs well with Pentapeptide-18 (Leuphasyl), the only pairing with published data; Snap-8 by formulation practice Argireline and Syn-Ake by formulation practice (no published pairing study found)
Keep apart from Heat above 40°C during blending Heat above 40°C during blending

A note on pairing: the strongest combination data in this family is for Argireline with Leuphasyl, where a 43-woman study reported a larger reduction in line depth for the pair than for either alone (Schagen, 2017). I found no published study on Snap-8 with Argireline together. Combining them is common practice in formulation, not a studied result.

How to read the label concentration

Both are sold as dilute solutions. Lotioncrafter states its Snap-8 solution holds 0.05% Acetyl Octapeptide-3 (Lotioncrafter). A "10% Snap-8" label means 10% of that solution. Compare products solution to solution. At Skin Perfection we put exact concentrations on our labels, with no proprietary blends, so you can do that math.

Which one suits you?

  • Choose Argireline if you want the ingredient with the most published human data, or you need an oil-soluble grade for a balm.
  • Choose Snap-8 if you have used Argireline, want to try its longer relative, and accept that its edge comes from supplier figures.
  • Use both if you are building your own serum. They share a water-based home and a cool-down step, which makes them easy to combine.

How to use Snap-8 and Argireline in a routine

Our Snap-8 peptide serum booster and Argireline Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 serum booster are raw solutions you add to a water-based serum, lotion or cream. Do not apply them undiluted.

  1. Refrigerate on arrival.
  2. Add 9 drops per 1% per fluid ounce of base. For 5% Snap-8 in 1 oz, that is 45 drops.
  3. Shake or stir until even.
  4. Apply the blend to the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes, morning and night.
  5. Take same-light photos at week 0 and week 4. The human studies above ran 4 weeks.

For a lip-focused booster, see Argireline Amplified peptide. For the whole family, read our expression line peptides guide, then Syn-Ake vs Argireline, Matrixyl vs Argireline and our peptides in skincare guide. Our earlier Snap-8 peptide guide has formula ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Is Snap-8 a stronger version of Argireline?

Snap-8 is a longer relative of Argireline from the same maker. The distributor sheet says it is about 30% more active, but that figure has no published panel size, duration or concentration behind it. I could not find an independent head-to-head study, so think of it as a relative with supplier-reported advantages.

Can I use Snap-8 and Argireline together?

Yes. Both are water-soluble and both go in below 40°C, which makes them easy to blend into one serum. Keep each inside its supplier range: Argireline solution C at 2 to 10% and Snap-8 at 3 to 10%. I found no published study on this pair together, so combining them is formulation practice, not a studied result.

What percentage of Snap-8 should a serum have?

Lubrizol lists a 3 to 10% use level for Snap-8 peptide solution C. That refers to the solution as supplied, which Lotioncrafter states holds 0.05% Acetyl Octapeptide-3. Look for a stated percentage on the label, so you can compare one product's solution level directly to another's.

Is Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 the same as Argireline?

Yes. Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is the current INCI name for Argireline, and the CosIng record lists Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 among its other names. You will still see the older name on some labels and in older studies, so read the two as the same ingredient.
