Bakuchiol is a plant-derived active from Psoralea corylifolia seeds, used at 3 to 15% for the look of smoother, firmer skin. It is the ingredient people reach for when retinol does not suit them.

This is a formulation ingredient, not a finished serum. Do not apply it undiluted.

What is in the bottle

INCI: Vegetable Glycerin, Water, Bakuchiol Extract, Silver Dihydrogen Citrate

Four ingredients. Silver dihydrogen citrate is the preservative.

The carrier is glycerin and water, so this version blends into water-based formulas. 0.5 fl oz blue glass dropper bottle. Vegan, paraben-free, fragrance-free, cruelty-free.

Bakuchiol and retinol

Bakuchiol comes from the babchi plant, used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese practice. It is often called a bio-retinol because published comparisons put it in the same conversation as retinol for the look of fine lines and texture — while being better tolerated by people who find retinoids drying or irritating.

It is not chemically related to retinol. It is a different molecule that people use for similar reasons.

If retinol has never bothered your skin, retinol is cheaper. If it has, this is why bakuchiol exists.

How much to add

Recommended usage rate is 3 to 15%. Using our house rate of 9 drops per 1% per fluid ounce:

Concentration Into 1 oz Into 2 oz
3% 27 drops · 0.9 g 54 drops · 1.8 g
5% 45 drops · 1.5 g 90 drops · 3.0 g
10% 90 drops · 3.0 g 180 drops · 6.0 g
15% 135 drops · 4.5 g 270 drops · 9.0 g

Start at 3% if you have not used it before. Full conversions on the serum booster chart.

What it is used for

  • The look of softened expression lines
  • The look of firmer cheeks and brow area
  • Skin that finds retinoids too drying
  • Uneven-looking texture and tone

How to use it

  1. Choose a water-based serum, gel or cream as your base.
  2. Add the drops for the percentage you want. Start low.
  3. Cap and shake well.
  4. Refrigerate what you are not using.
  5. Apply the finished blend at night. Sunscreen in the morning, as with any active.

What to pair it with

Bakuchiol layers with Matrixyl 3000 and Juveleven. Unlike retinol, it does not need to be kept away from your peptides.
