When you think of Earth Day and conserving our environment, you probably think about zero-emission vehicles, carpooling, planting trees, riding bicycles, turning the lights out when you leave a room, shutting the air conditioner off, and opening a window. However, did you know that the skincare and cosmetics products you use daily could hurt the environment?
Traditionally, most of the products that men and women buy to enhance their complexions are loaded with chemical-heavy and synthetic ingredients that almost no one can pronounce. These products harm our planet in many ways, and – when it comes right down to it – they’re not ideal for our health, either.
So what can you do? Do you have to embrace your bare face as it is and never wear cosmetics or enjoy a facial or moisturizer again? Not at all. There’s a significant movement among eco-conscious cosmetics and skincare companies to create products with natural, organic ingredients that will make you look and feel just as beautiful as those made from synthetic ingredients, but without harming the environment. Let’s explore the differences.
What are You Washing Down the Sink?
First of all, when you use skin care products, whether we’re talking about cleansers, moisturizers, or makeup products, you’re going to wash them off eventually. With traditional products, you don’t know what you’re flushing down the drain. When you wash away natural, organic ingredients, you’ll see that you’re not introducing anything harmful back into the ecosystem.
Are You an Animal Lover?
Next, sadly enough, a lot of large cosmetics companies still test their products on animals. This cruel behavior may be legal, but it is immoral. When you purchase natural products, you can look for labels like “Cruelty-Free” and “Vegan.” You’ll know that your powder, moisturizer, serum, or facial cleanser wasn’t tested on animals before it got to you and that it’s completely safe to use without ever having harmed another living being.
You’ll also notice that the manufacturers of more eco-conscious, natural products are also more conscious of how they package them. Instead of using excesses of plastic and cardboard, they use minimal packaging with more recycled materials. Plus, their dispensers and bottles are almost always recyclable and/or reusable, as well, giving you yet another way to decrease the size of your carbon footprint while enjoying healthy, beautiful skincare and cosmetics products.
A Growing Movement
The growing sustainability and “greening” of the cosmetics industry is definitely not a trendy fad. We all know that we have to make changes and improvements to our lives and the products we use to preserve the Earth for our grandchildren and their grandchildren. That’s why this movement toward greener, more sustainable, and natural products industry is growing and taking off.
In fact, in May of this year, New York City will host the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit. Representatives from all over the world and all over the skincare and cosmetics industry will discuss the future of natural and organic products. They’ll discuss replacing parabens and microplastics with safer, more environmentally friendly ingredients, as well as other safety and health issues associated with chemical-based products.
So, what does your makeup have to do with Earth Day? You can do your part to conserve the environment and to live a greener, more sustainable lifestyle simply by switching to products that use natural ingredients and sustainable practices. Your skin will thank you, and so will Mother Earth.
