Best Night Retinol Serum for Glowing Skin

The best night retinol serum for glowing skin is one your skin can tolerate several nights a week, applied to clean, dry skin before moisturizer, with sunscreen every morning. Retinol belongs at night because retinoids are light-sensitive, and the glow most people notice first is smoother texture, which in published trials began to show from about week 4. For most people I recommend Retinol Glow, a retinol serum with bakuchiol, niacinamide and Argireline, and the 2.5% Retinol Serum for experienced users.

This guide is about the night routine itself: why the timing matters, the exact order of steps, a week-by-week schedule, what to pair and what to keep apart, and what to do on your off nights. If you are still comparing brands and strengths, start with my night retinol serum reviews and buying guide, then come back here to build the routine.

Why retinol is a night step

  • Light sensitivity. Retinol and the other natural retinoids are light-sensitive molecules. Tolleson and colleagues (2005) reviewed the photostability, photoreactions and phototoxicity of retinol and related retinoids, which is a big part of why formulators, me included, design retinol products for evening use.
  • Daytime sun matters more than any serum. In a randomized trial of 903 adults under 55 followed for about 4.5 years, the group using sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin aging (Hughes 2013). A night retinol plus a morning SPF is the combination with the strongest evidence.
  • Fewer layers at night. Without makeup and sunscreen on top, a retinol serum can sit on the skin undisturbed for hours.

The exact night routine, step by step

  1. Cleanse gently. A low-foam cleanser. Avoid scrubbing right before retinol.
  2. Dry completely. Pat dry and wait until the skin feels fully dry. Damp skin makes retinoids feel warmer and can increase dryness.
  3. Apply a pea-size amount of retinol serum to the whole face, then neck and décolleté. Keep it off eyelids, the corners of the nose and the lips.
  4. Moisturize. A plain moisturizer on top helps limit dryness while your skin adjusts.
  5. Optional: buffer. If you are sensitive or in your first weeks, reverse steps 3 and 4: moisturizer first, retinol on top.

A week-by-week schedule

Weeks Retinol nights Other nights What you may notice
1 to 2 2 per week Peptide or hydrating serum Possible mild dryness
3 to 4 Every other night Peptide or bakuchiol serum Texture starts to look smoother
5 to 12 Nightly if comfortable One rest night if flaking In a pooled analysis of 471 women using 0.1% retinol, improvements over vehicle were measured from week 4 to week 12 (Farris 2024)
12 to 24 Maintenance As needed The Kafi trial measured wrinkle improvement at 24 weeks

Sensitive skin: patch test on the inner arm for 24 hours first, start at the lowest frequency (one night per week) and always buffer with moisturizer. Our 2.5% Retinol Serum label states it is for all skin types except sensitive, so choose Retinol Glow instead and patch test it.

What to pair with retinol at night, and what to keep apart

Ingredient Same night as retinol? Why
Hyaluronic acid, glycerin Yes Hydration under or over retinol softens dryness
Peptides (Argireline, Matrixyl 3000) Yes, or alternate nights Different pathways, no known conflict
Niacinamide Yes Commonly combined; Retinol Glow includes both
Bakuchiol Yes, or alternate nights Retinol Glow combines them; also a good off-night option
Glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid No Stacking exfoliants with retinol increases dryness and sensitivity
Benzoyl peroxide No Use it in the morning or on other nights
L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) Use in the morning Vitamin C fits the daytime antioxidant step

Which Skin Perfection night retinol to choose

Serum Key ingredients Who it suits
Retinol Glow Radiant Renewal Serum Retinol, bakuchiol, niacinamide, Argireline All skin types per its label; sensitive skin should patch test first. My pick for a "glow" routine.
2.5% Retinol Serum Retinol in an aloe, witch hazel and phospholipid gel Experienced retinol users; not for sensitive skin per its label

I go through the 2.5% serum ingredient by ingredient in my Skin Perfection 2.5% Retinol Serum review.

Your off-night glow serum

Rest nights do not have to be empty nights. This is the blend I use between retinol nights. It pairs bakuchiol with a collagen-supporting amino acid sequence, each at the manufacturer's highest recommended rate (9 drops = 1% per fluid ounce):

Ingredient Rate Drops into 1 oz Grams into 30 g
Aloe Vera Gel Serum Base base 1 oz 30 g
Bakuchiol Serum Booster 15% 135 drops 4.5 g
Syn-Coll (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5) 3% 27 drops 0.9 g

The aloe base accepts up to 60% added ingredients per its label, and this blend adds 18%. Shake, refrigerate and use 3 to 4 drops before moisturizer on non-retinol nights.

Why bakuchiol: in a randomized, double-blind study of 44 adults, 0.5% bakuchiol cream and 0.5% retinol cream both reduced wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation over 12 weeks with no statistically significant difference between them, and the retinol group reported more scaling and stinging (Dhaliwal 2019).

Sensitive skin: patch test first, then start Bakuchiol at 3% (27 drops) and Syn-Coll at 1% (9 drops), and work up over a few weeks.

Signs your night routine needs adjusting

What you see Likely cause What to change
Tight, dry patches around the mouth and nose Retinol too close to thin, creased areas Keep retinol a finger-width away from these areas and apply a richer moisturizer there first
Light flaking in weeks 1 to 3 Normal adjustment Drop one retinol night per week and buffer with moisturizer
Stinging on application Skin still damp, or an acid used the same night Wait until skin is fully dry and move acids to a different night
Redness that lasts into the next day Frequency too high for your skin Pause for 3 to 4 nights, then restart at one night per week
No visible change after 12 weeks Too few retinol nights, or skipped sunscreen Increase frequency if comfortable and wear SPF daily

If irritation persists after pausing, stop using the product and talk with your dermatologist.

The morning after

  • Rinse or gently cleanse.
  • Vitamin C or a peptide serum if you use one.
  • Moisturizer, then broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day, including cloudy days.

Storage and freshness

Store retinol away from heat and light, with the cap closed tightly. In a packaging study presented at the 2022 IFSCC Congress, retinol losses were greatest at 40°C (104°F) in every package tested and smallest at 5°C, and the most protective pack was a pump tube. A cool cupboard, not a steamy bathroom, is the right place.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait after cleansing to apply retinol?

Wait until your skin feels completely dry. There is no magic number of minutes. Dry skin is the goal.

Can I use retinol every night?

Many people can after 4 to 6 weeks of building up. If you see flaking or tightness, drop back to every other night.

Will retinol make my skin glow right away?

Not on night one. The first visible change is usually smoother texture, which in the Farris analysis was measurable from week 4.

Should I put retinol on before or after moisturizer?

Before, on dry skin, for the most direct contact. After moisturizer if you are sensitive or in your first weeks.

Can I use a night retinol serum around my eyes?

Keep it off the eyelids. On crow's feet, apply a thin layer of moisturizer first.

Is retinol safe during pregnancy?

Ask your physician before using any retinoid if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Bakuchiol and peptides are common alternatives to discuss.
